Deciding on the menu for your kids birthday parties is the toughest job on your party 'to do' list. Though planning for the food menu for your kid's birthday party seems to be an easy task, but in real it's tricky, as there are so many things you need to consider.
Few days before it was my kid's 6th birthday and we had arranged a party for his friends at home.
There are lot of things to keep in mind, so I decided to do a post with complete details right from planning the party to the menu. Hope you will find this article helpful.
1. Guests - The first thing that you need to do is make a list of the guests or the number of people you are going to invite for the party. Is it only the kids that you are going to invite, or kids along with their mommies and siblings or kids with their entire family.
2. Venue - Based on the number of guests, you need to decide the venue for the birthday party, ie., where you are going to celebrate your kid's birthday. Whether you want to have it at some outlet like MacD or any restaurant's party hall, or in the community hall in your apartment or at your home itself. We celebrated our kids birthday at our home itself.
3. Decorations - Once the venue is decided, you need to decorate your party area and there are so many ways that you can do. No party is fun without balloons. You can decorate it with lots of balloons, colourful ribbons, happy birthday banner, etc. You can also have 1 big balloon with chocolates inside. You can plan for a theme party as well, for eg. polka dots, princess theme, dora theme, rainbow theme, frozen theme, etc. We planned ours with spider man theme, my kid's favorite cartoon character these days :).
You can also give party hats, face masks, yo yo, etc., these are kids pleasers. You also need to buy disposable plates, glasses, spoons and tissue papers.
4. Cake - The birthday cake is the main center of attractions for kids and lots of emotions are attached with it for the birthday kid as well. The kid's usually give their preference of the type of cake they want for their birthday, it will usually be some cartoon characters which they like. We had a spider man theme cake for our kid's birthday. You can get it done with some local cake bakers or approach home bakers in your area, they do a really neat job, I can vouch.
5. Food - This is the most important part of any party that you need to decide well in advance. Are you planning just for a snacks party or you are going to serve dinner. Are you going to order food from outside or you are going to prepare the entire menu yourself or you are going to keep a mix of outside food plus some home made treats. I usually prefer serving finger foods like rolls, sandwiches, nuggets, french fries, mini pizzas, momos, cutlets, etc. These are easy for the kids to eat by themselves without any mess and no cutlery is required. For more details on food, please scroll down.
6. Entertainment - You can also conduct some games for kids to keep them engaged and give away some useful prizes. Usually toddlers will not understand complicated games, you can go for simple games like passing the parcel, dancing when the music is on, etc. Also have some music and dance and kids just love to do them.
7. Return gifts - Kids are super excited to attend birthdays and will not leave the party unless they receive their return gifts. For buying return gifts, you can categorize kids according to their age. We categorized into 3 categories, below 3 years, 3-7 years and 7+ years. We bought similar gifts in each category.
8. Others - You need to make your house kids friendly and keep all your breakable items in some safe place. You also need to keep a big polythene bag to dispose all the trash or a dustbin or carton would serve the purpose.
This is the menu which I served on my kid's birthday and below I have also listed some other party food ideas and their combinations which you can go for.
Here are some other snacks and dinner ideas that you can plan. These combinations are no hard and fast rule, you can select the items according to your tastes and preference.
To all the above menu you need to add potato chips, fresh or aerated drinks, ice creams and any sweet of your choice.
