Filter Kaapi
South Indian Filter Kaapi is a coffee drink made with coffee decoction obtained by brewing coffee powder using a traditional coffee filter. It is widely available in South India. The word Kaapi refers to the South Indian phonetic of the word coffee.

Usually this coffee is served in tumblers and davara. It is then poured back and forth between them twice or thrice to make it frothy and to cool it a bit, ideal for sipping.

Though I’m a big fan of coffee, I usually make instant coffee for myself. But once in a while I do make filter kaapi to enjoy the aroma and taste.

Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 15 minutes | Yield: 2 Servings

Ingredients:

  • 3 teaspoons coffee powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 1cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar or as required

Directions for Filter Kaapi Recipe

1. Put the coffee powder in the upper portion of the coffee filter and tap it gently so that the powder settles evenly. Put the stem disc into it pressing the coffee powder evenly. Now fix this upper portion over the lower portion.

2. Bring water to rolling boil point and pour it over the coffee powder, cover it with the lid and set aside undisturbed for 15 minutes. The coffee decoction will collect in the lower container.

3. Put the coffee decoction in a tumbler as required (2-3 tsp per cup), add sugar and pour boiling milk over it. If you like a strong coffee, add more decoction and if you like a mild coffee add less decoction.

4. Now pour from the tumbler to the davara and vice versa (twice or thrice), to get a nice froth.

5. Enjoy the nice aroma and taste of South Indian Filter Kaapi.
