Tomato Rice Recipe | Thakkali Sadam

Tomato rice is a tangy South Indian rice dish popularly known as thakkali sadam. This is one of the easiest one pot meals you can make and relish. If you have a busy schedule, you can make this quick rice in just 15 minutes, all it requires is some cooked rice and ripe tomatoes. You can also make use of leftover rice for this recipe.



It is a healthy and delicious rice preparation with tangy taste of tomatoes. It also is an excellent menu for your lunch boxes. You can enjoy this one pot meal with onion raita and some papads.

Tomato Rice Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked basmati rice, you can use leftover rice as well
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon split urad daal
  • 1 medium size onions, finely sliced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • 2 large ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 2-3 green chillies, slit lengthwise
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • salt as needed
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • a handful of chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

Directions for tomato rice recipe


1. In a pan, heat oil and ghee. Add mustard seeds and split urad daal, let it sizzle.

2. Add onions and saute till it becomes light golden. Add ginger garlic paste and cook till raw smell goes off.

3. Add tomatoes, green chillies, coriander powder, garam masala powder and salt. Cook till tomatoes are fully mashed up and oil separates.

4. Mix in the cooked rice, cover and cook on low flame for 2-3 minutes. Switch off the flame and let it rest for another 10 minutes.

5. Plate it in a serving dish, garnish with coriander leaves and enjoy with onion raita and papads.


Notes

  • Use ripe tomatoes, to give a nice colour. 
  • While mixing rice, add little by little and adjust the tanginess preferred. If you like to have more tangy, add less rice and if you prefer mild add more rice.
