Aloo bonda is a famous street food and is basically a south Indian version of batata vada from Maharashtra. It is available in all Udupi hotels and many restaurants in South India and is a very popular tea time snacks.

Aloo bonda is prepared by using boiled potatoes. These potatoes are then mashed up and seasoned with spices and made into round balls. These balls are dipped in gram flour batter and deep fried in hot oil until golden.

Aloo bonda is enjoyed best with your evening cup of tea along with ketchup, green chutney or coconut chutney.

Aloo Bonda Recipe

Ingredients 


for potato masala
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 sprig curry leaves, chopped
  • 2-3 green chillies, finely chopped or crushed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon broken cashew nuts
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • salt as required
  • 2 medium potatoes, boiled and mashed
  • 1 tablespoon coriander leaves


for the batter
  • 1 cup gram flour or besan
  • 1 tablespoon rice flour
  • a pinch of ajwain or carom seeds
  • a pinch of baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • oil for deep frying


Directions for making aloo bonda recipe


1. Heat oil in a pan and splutter the cumin seeds. Add chopped ginger, curry leaves and green chillies, saute for few seconds.

2. Add onions, cashew nuts, turmeric powder, salt and mix.

3. Add mashed potatoes and coriander leaves. Give a mix and cook for few minutes.

4. Switch off the flame and let it come down to room temperature. Once cooled, make equal sized round balls out of this potato mixture.

5. In another mixing bowl, take gram flour or besan, rice flour, ajwain, baking soda, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt. Add little water and make a lump free batter using your hands, the batter should be neither too thick nor too runny.

6. Now dip each potato ball in the batter and deep fry in hot oil till golden brown on all sides. Do it in batches till all potato mixture is used up.

7. Serve hot aloo bonda with chutney or ketchup.
